An improvement over the original 28-90 lens. Virtually identical to the non USM version, but it focuses slightly faster and makes a tiny bit less noise. Sharper than the mk1 version, but that's not saying a lot, since it needs stopping down a fair bit to get the corners reasonably sharp. Distinctly light/cheap feel.
